US Positive On Beef Sales To Japan
US Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman is insisting that efforts to regain access to the Japanese beef market in a month or so remain on track.
That is despite hints from Japan's farm minister that it could be delayed.
Minister Kamei recently told reporters that it is difficult to realise an early settlement. Japan is still deciding how young is too young to test cattle for BSE, found last December in one US cow.
But secretary Veneman cautioned reporters on over-reacting.
In the meantime, Veneman is seeking $33 million next year, so as to continue implementing a US animal ID program to prevent and control disease.
