Turkey: 2,500 livestock susceptible after bluetongue outbreak
A bluetongue outbreak in Kirklareli (Karaabalar) had left 2,530 livestock susceptible, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported.
The OIE received the information from Prof. Dr Irfan Erol, Director General of Food and Control, Directorate of Food and Control, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ankara, Turkey.
The date of the start of the event was August 11, 2014, which was more than three years after the previous occurrence of bluetongue in March 2011.
125 infected cases were reported in sheep, leaving 2,410 sheep and 120 cattle susceptible. With 6 deaths occurring in sheep, this makes the apparent morbidity rate, apparent mortality rate and apparent case fatality rate 5.19%, 0.25% and 4.80% respectively. Control measures applied included the control of arthropods, quarantine, movement control inside the country, vaccination and disinfection of infected premises.
