Mexico urges gov't to ban JBS ground beef
A Mexican federal commission is asking the country's agricultural authorities to remove JBS-Swift & Co.'s Greeley, Colorado, beef plant from its list of eligible exporters following the company's recall of some 380,000 pounds of beef in June on fears of E. coli contamination.
The Federal Commission for the Protection of Sanitary Risks is pressing Mexico's agriculture secretary to prohibit imports of ground beef produced by JBS until the company can demonstrate and verify the product's safety, according to a statement.
Most of the products recalled were primals and subprimals, though it is likely that some amount was processed into ground beef by downstream customers.
In its initial recall, JBS said the products were shipped to distributors and retailers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.
