Panama lifts ban on Canadian beef
Panama has removed its six-year ban on Canadian beef, imposed after the discovery of mad cow disease in Canada.
The decision follows a meeting on Tuesday (Aug 11) in Panama City between Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli, during which the two countries completed negotiations for a free trade agreement.
Panama has reopened its border to Canadian beef after approving of Canada's meat inspection system, said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.
International Trade Minister Stockwell Day said Canadian pork will also have new market access to Panama. Last year, Canada's pork exports to Panama totalled C$3.7 million (US$3.36 million).
Day said the opening of Panama's market will create opportunities and improve the bottom line for Canadian producers.
