Digital Angel to market livestock identification systems in Brazil
Digital Angel Corporation, a US company specialising in tracking and identification technology, announced Thursday (Aug 10) a distribution agreement with a Brazilian company to market electronic RFID (radio frequency identification) livestock tags, antennas and readers in Brazil.
Digital Angel also manufactures and markets livestock tags in Argentina and Chile. The company supplied the USDA with 300,000 units of its microchips in 2003.
The agreement, signed with Digitaltronic, a Brazilian company based in Sao Paolo, allows Digital Angel to establish a presence in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Uruguay.
Digital Angel President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin N. McGrath said the Company had already received two orders with a combined value of more than US$200,000 through Digitaltronic.
Digital Angel would continue penetrating the rapidly expanding South American market, McGrath said, adding that the agreement is a milestone for the company.
Brazil's move towards measures to eliminate foot-and-mouth disease and enhance cattle traceability should strengthen their beef export industry, he continued.
The two Brazilian livestock regulatory agencies, Embrapa (Brazilian Agriculture and Research Corporation) and SISBOV (Brazilian System of Identification and Certification of Origin for Bovine and Buffalo) are working together to develop and promote electronic traceability.
Digital Angel's products include identification and monitoring of humans, pets, fish, poultry and livestock through its patented implantable microchips.
