Brazil's Mato Grosso soy farmers lack fertilizer
Mato Grosso's Agricultural Economy Institute, or Imea, said farmers haven't bought enough fertilizer in the state for the 2008-09 soy harvest, Estado reported late Thursday (August 7).
Farmers in Mato Grosso, Brazil's largest soy producing state, still need to buy fertilizer to plant 30 percent, or 1.74 million hectares, of land available for soy, Estado reported.
The area devoted to soy in Mato Grosso is expected to reach 5.8 million hectares in 2008-09, the agency said. Planting in the centre-west state should start in 40 days.
Brazil is the second-largest soy producer in the world after the US.
