Australia launches new seafood research centre

Australia has launched a new seafood research centre that will focus on value-added seafood products and improving management practices and access to premium export markets.

The Australian government has provided US$35.52 million in funding, while the industry, research providers and other sources will invest a further US$100 million into the facility over the next seven years.

Besides research on premium farmed and wild-catch seafood products, the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre (Seafood CRC) will also study critical issues in managing delivery along the value chain for the aquaculture and wild-catch industries.

Seafood CRC scientists will seek to develop improved seafood marketing methods as well as breeding programmes and feeding regimes. The goal is to boost industry growth, while keeping production costs down.
