Ukrainians get compensation for pig slaughtering due to African swine fever
Due to the threat of African swine fever, the payment of compensation for pigs slaughtered in the village of Komyshuvatka in Zaporizhzhia region was due to start on Thursday (Aug 2).
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov announced this during his working visit to Zaporizhzhia on Thursday (Aug 2), a UKRINFORM correspondent reported.
"We have taken all of the necessary measures very promptly in order to prevent the spread of African swine fever, using all of the possible resources. On August 2, people will already be receiving compensation for the killing of pigs," he said.
Cases of the deadly pig disease African swine fever were reported in the Prymorsk district in Zaporizhzhia region. The ten-kilometre quarantine zone consists of six villages and three farms in the Prymorsk district. Security guards are working at the entry and exit from the village of Komyshuvatka, and quarantine and police posts and signs indicating the mandatory bypassing of the quarantine zone were installed.
Quarantine on African swine fever will be removed 40 days after the culling of all pigs in the epizootic outbreak, the slaughtering of pigs in the first emergency zone and the taking of other necessary measures. All food markets in the region have been taken under control.
The government has allocated UAH483,320 (US$60,000) to Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration to compensate for damages due to the slaughtering of pigs because of the outbreak of African swine fever. The compensation will be UAH18.18 (US$2.24) per kilogramme of live weight.
