DNA Genetics upgrades swine genetic testing facility

US-based DNA Genetics has completed the installation of 80 FIRE (Feed Intake Recording Equipment) Pig Performance Testing Feeders from Osborne Industries to advance their swine genetic testing facility in eastern Nebraska.

This gives the US$4 million facility the capability to gather performance data from more than 7,500 boars each year.

Feed intake data using FIRE is collected from boars from three nucleus breeds: Duroc, Yorkshire and Landrace. A bio-secure observatory conference room at the facility is open to the public for viewing the testing.

"Installation of the Osborne FIRE System, providing the ability to measure feed intake, results in a tremendous enhancement to our ability to accurately improve feed efficiency in all lines," said Dr. Tom Rathje, chief technical officer, DNA Genetics. "The insight we will gain from this information will not only impact the selection programme, but will provide a deeper understanding of the growth curves and optimal diets for the DNA pig."

FIRE, the gold standard in pig performance testing technology, is used by leading swine genetics companies all around the world.
