Philippine hog weekly: Farmgate hogs prices steady amid intensifying monsoon rains (Jul 31, 2013)
An eFeedLink Exclusive
Price summary
Philippine farmgate hog prices were steady over the week amid stronger monsoon rains which flooded most of Metro Manila.
As usual, hog raisers are not expecting any improvement in farmgate prices due to the third quarter syndrome.
Moreover, the monsoon season where rains get stronger, contributed to the sluggish trade as observers believe that this trend will continue until the onset of the fourth quarter of the year.
Meanwhile, an agricultural university is studying the possibility of using sweet sorghum grains as a complementary raw feed material to corn grains as a possible solution to lower feed costs.
In a report by GMA News, the Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC) discovered the use of sweet sorghum grains can potentially lower feed cost to PHP20.49 (US$0.46) per kilo compared to PHP21.86 (US$0.50) per kilo of corn.
With feed accounting to 50% of the production cost, Nicomedes Eleazar of the Bureau of Agricultural Research says competitiveness in cost will have an important impact in raising the standard of living of farmers.
PAC's study show that animals acceptance to sweet sorghum was similar to that of corn-based feeds. But PAC is quick to conclude that the grain will be immediately used as such as it still does not have a market. Companies will also not commit to purchase of sweet sorghum because of unstable supply.
Still, PAC says it will continue to explore the potentials of sweet sorghum as a feed ingredient.
