India annual local wheat buys at record 23.5 million tonnes

Food Corporation of India's local wheat purchases from farmers rose to a record 25.29 million tonnes in the April 1-July 31 period, a government official said Tuesday (Aug 4).

The government had set a purchase target of 24.40 million tonnes for state-run Food Corp. for the year that began April 1, which was surpassed June 15.

Food Corp. had bought 22.54 million tonnes in the same period last year, said the official, declining to be named.
