Tanzania's cattle prices ease despite 4% fall in deliveries

Prices of cattle in various categories declined last week, with exception of that of the grade three cow which increased by 6.2%, as cattle deliveries to the Pugu market in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania decreased by 4%.

Herders were assured of an availability of food and were seeing no emergency to sell the animals to have money to replenish food stocks. According to a report by the ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing, 750 head of cattle were supplied last week compared with 780 the previous week.

The average price of meat remained at between TZS3,000 (US$1.97) and TZS4,800 (US$3.16) a kilo. The price of a mature grade two cow decreased to TZS380,000 (US$250) from TZS395,000 (US$259.87) the preceding week while that of a grade three animal rose to TZS220,000 (US$144.74) from TZS207,000 (US$136.18).

The report shows that 432 animals were supplied on average daily last week compared with 524 the previous week.
