Pakistan's bird flu threat to poultry sector overrated

The bird flu virus situation in Pakistan is not as dangerous as believed, and that was a result of a lack of understanding, according to Livestock and Dairy Development Minister Hamayon Aziz Kurd.

The people must know that there is no danger to the poultry industry from bird flu, said the minister, noting the people's lack of knowledge about the safety of poultry products would further injure the already troubled industry.

He said the Livestock Programme of Relief International has been brought before a slew of organisations to inform them about epidemic diseases shifting from animals to human beings.

A senior official of the Relief International said there are 100 diseases that might shift from animals to humans, but that they are focusing on the top five diseases including bird flu and TB.

The official said they are striving to seek permanent cure of that diseases through the help of both medical and veterinary doctors.
