Venezuela strengthens aquaculture ties with Russia

Venezuela and Russia are joining forces to boost their fisheries-aquaculture sectors under an agreement of cooperation signed July 27.

The agreement will allow advancement in the development of activities tied to vessel construction and repair, and to explore the possibility of using Venezuelan and Russian ports for capture and scientific research purposes.

This treaty will promote and develop the sustainable use of fisheries resources and the aquaculture sector, through a technological and educative exchange between technicians, fishers and aquaculture farmers, according to Gilberto Gimenez, president of the Socialist Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INSOPESCA).

This cooperation could help Russia increase its fishery production to 1.2 million-1.5 million tonnes if it takes better advantage of oceanic resources and is able to fish in the exclusive economic zones of other countries, said Andrei Krayny, head of the Federal Fishery Agency (FAF).
