BASF introduces new certification for feed additive quality
To assure consumer confidence, BASF intermediates formic acid, propionic acid and their mixtures now come with a certificate with the new "European Feed Additives and Premixtures Quality System" (FAMI-QS) standard.
BASF is one of the first companies to apply the new standards to quality controls for feed additives. Until recently, there were no unified EU standards for feed additives. By adhering to the FAMI-QS rules, the company voluntarily guarantees compliance with a code of practice that includes precise product traceability.
FAMI-QS certification was introduced by a group of leading feed additive manufacturers which sought to guarantee EU-wide standards for all feed additives and pre-mixtures.
The new EU hygiene regulation has been in force since Jan 2006.
The core strength of the quality system is its precise product traceability. All internal and external logistical processes, like the filling of products into tank trucks or internal product storage within BASF, are monitored and recorded.
Besides traceability, FAMI-QS also covers product safety, health and safety at work as well as environmental protection.
The European Feed additives and pre-mixtures quality system association is a non profit organization created in 2004.
The purpose of the Association is to manage and co-ordinate all activities related to FAMI-QS. Besides establishing and maintaining the standards, the organisation is involved in setting up adequate certification systems and co-ordination.
Other than BASF, companies like Adisseo, Ajinomoto and ADM have also obtained certification. A full list is available at http://www.fami-qs.org/certifiedcompanies.htm
