Australian Goat Meat Exports Up In 2003/04

Goat meat exports jumped 5% in 2003/04 on the previous financial year to reach 16,094 tonnes sw.  This result occurred despite mixed results in Australia's export markets.

Exports to the Caribbean were down significantly, falling 19% to 1,288 tonnes sw compared to 2002/03. Similarly, exports to Canada were also down considerably on the previous financial year, falling over 21% to 945 tonnes sw.  There were also significant decreases in exports to Mexico, the EU, Malaysia and Singapore.

Exports to Australia's two largest markets for goat meat, the US and Taiwan, reversed the trend seen in the majority of Australia's other export markets to record increases in 2003/04.  Shipments to the US rose 6% on 2002/03 to reach 7,811 tonnes sw, while shipments to Taiwan jumped 31% to 5,065 tonnes sw over the same period.
