Cargill to close US beef harvest facility

Cargill will close its Milwaukee, Wisconsin beef harvest facility effective from August 1, due to tight cattle supply as producers retain cattle for herd expansion.
The beef harvest plant has a daily processing capacity of 1,300 to 1,400 cattle.
John Keating, president of Cargill Beef, based in Wichita, Kansas, said, "The harsh reality is that the US beef cattle herd is at its lowest level since 1951, with any significant herd expansion being years away."
The company's six remaining US beef processing plants are located in California, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Pennsylvania.
