Peru to extend anchovy season from Jul 31 to Aug 10

Peru's first anchovy season due on Jul 31 could be extended to Aug 10, as a result of El Nino this year.

By Jul 29, only 65% or 1.64 million metric tonnes of the season's overall allowable catch of 2.53 million tonnes had been caught, according to a Peruvian producer.

Industrial fishmeal vessels will be allowed to operate till Aug 10, from the northern tip of the Peruvian maritime domain to the 16°00′ south latitude, in the area of Atico-Arequipa.

The Ministry of Production (Produce) made the decision after discovering abnormal water temperatures off the Peruvian coast since the end of last year, as reported by Peru's marine research agency Imarpe. These high temperature abnormalities delayed the main spawning period of anchovy in the north-central area of the Peruvian coast.

However, temperatures have begun returning to normal since July, and a marked decrease in climatic anomalies was observed.

Peru's first anchovy season normally runs from May to July, while the second season typically takes place from November through January. This year, the first anchovy season started earlier than usual on Apr 23 in anticipation of a potential El Nino effect on catches later in the year.
