Indonesia will import 62,180 tonnes of beef for its fasting month as well as religious and national holidays this year.
The import amount will comprise of 50,000 tonnes of frozen beef and 12,180 tonnes innards. Indonesia will also import 5,600 tonnes of other ruminant animal meat.
Domestic supply is estimated at 277,030 tonnes, but demand is seen at 339,210 tonnes, according to Achmad Suryana, Head of the Food Security Agency at the Department of Agriculture.
Suryana did not mention where the beef would be imported, but industry sources believe the suppliers would be Australia and New Zealand, as the two countries are free from the foot-and-mouth disease.
