US company sends DDGS to Australia for dairy feeding trials

The US Grains Council (USGC) and Hawkeye Gold, LLC plan to send a sample shipment of US distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to Australia, where it will be used in dairy feeding trials, the partnership announced Tuesday (July 29, 2008).

Hawkeye Gold will ship 46 tonnes of DDGS to Australian feedmill CopRice, a major supplier of stockfeed ingredients and livestock and feeds. CopRice is interested in studying DDGS for the possibility including it in its own feeding programme.

Ryan LeGrand, export marketing manager for Hawkeye Gold ,said this was a great opportunity for the company to enter into an agreement to supply DDGS to Australia, especially since droughts are getting more frequent in the country. The shipment would help the company to be the first to export to Australia.

Adel Yusupov, USGC regional director of Southeast Asia, signed a memorandum of understanding with CopRice on the Council's behalf in June. If US DDGS proves attractive, the company could take up DDGS in approximately 15 percent of their dairy diets. This would translate to around 45,000 tonnes a year, he added.

The shipment is expected to be sent in late August or early September.

Hawkeye Gold volunteered to supply the sample DDGS to CopRice once an agreement was reached. The US Grains Council will pay the freight costs.
