Guimaras province geared as Philippines' fisheries hub

The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is moulding Guimaras as a fisheries hub with the initiation of a P5 million (US$110, 277) coral garden project in Nueva Valencia town and P5 million worth of aquaculture livelihood projects next month.

The Guimaras project is part of the government's programme of raising fisheries' production.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) said it will allocate more funds for fisheries subsector this year to finance hunger programmes as well as production enhancement projects that would sustain its impressive performance in 2007 as well as creating more jobs and raise incomes for the fisherfolk.
