Argentina to resume fresh poultry exports to EU from 17 August after HPAI-free status restored

The resumption coincides with the entry into provisional force of the EU-Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement, allowing Argentina to utilise preferential poultry quota allocations under the deal.

Argentina will resume exports of fresh poultry meat and poultry products to the European Union from 17 August 2026, after the EU restored sanitary authorisation following Argentina's recovery of its highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)-free status, the country's Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Secretariat announced.

The authorisation follows Argentina's eradication of previous HPAI outbreaks and recognition of its disease-free status by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The secretariat said the EU's decision validates Argentina's sanitary control system and restores access to a strategic export market, with the Netherlands, Spain and Germany among the primary destinations for Argentine poultry within the bloc.

Argentina's poultry meat exports to the EU exceeded US$14 million in 2025, up 32% year on year. The secretariat said the resumed access is particularly significant given that the Interim Trade Agreement between the EU and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), which entered into provisional force on 1 May 2026, allows Argentina to fully utilise its preferential poultry meat quota under the agreement. The secretariat added that the development would strengthen the international standing of Argentina's poultry industry and support broader access to overseas markets beyond the EU.
