Irish group blasts Brazilian beef standards

The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) said major deficiencies still exist in Brazilian beef and that it should not be allowed to be traded in the EU.

Brazilian beef is not meeting the same standards as EU beef, said ICMSA's Beef & Cattle Committee chairperson Martin McMahon.

He was commenting on the latest inspection report on Brazilian beef, where 12 farms were inspected by EU inspectors and six or 50 percent of them were found to have deficiencies.

McMahon said if those deficiencies were found on an Irish farm, they would lead to a serious financial penalty or possibly imprisonment for the Irish farmer.
