US cattle on feed down six percent on July 1
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the US for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totalled 9.752 million head on July 1, 2009, down 6.3 percent or 655,000 head from the previous month.
Feedlot occupancy dropped to 58.4 percent from 62.3 percent last month, while inventory dropped to 190,000 head in Nebraska and 160,000 head in Kansas.
Placements dropped in Texas by 75,000 head from last month. Placements dropped 40,000 head in Nebraska and Kansas.
In June, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 315,000, 600-699 pounds were 290,000, 700-799 pounds were 371,000 and 800 pounds and greater were 415,000. This is the second lowest placements for the month of June since the series began in 1996.
Marketings of fed cattle during June totalled 1.989 million head, up 37,000 head from last month, the second lowest fed cattle marketings for the month of June since the series began in 1996.
Marketings were up 30,000 head in Kansas and down 20,000 head in Texas.
Other disappearance totalled 57,000, down 44,000 head from last month.
