Canada, Norway collaborate on aqua disease research

The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island is partnering with Norway's National Veterinary Institute to study aquatic animal diseases.

Centre co-director Dr Larry Hammell said the venture comes at a very important time, when fish and shellfish are the fastest-growing food source in the world.

"We've been getting it from the wild, and wild harvest has its limits," said Hammell. "The world is turning to aquaculture more and more, and with that we need to be looking at the best way to manage their health to reduce any losses due to disease."

Hammell said the OIE Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology and Risk Assessment of Aquatic Animal Diseases plans to work with producers, veterinarians and governments from around the world. It will look at the risks and impact of aquatic diseases on fish and shellfish, and work to keep marine food sources safe.
