Vietnam wheat imports reach 1.44 million tonnes

In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam has imported 1.44 million tonnes of wheat with a turnover of 350 million, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Both volume and value increased more than 80% over the same period last year. In July alone, the wheat import volume has reached 230,000 tonnes worth US$56 million.

According to Pham Duc Binh, vice president of the Association Vietnam Animal feed, the amount of imported wheat increased primarily as raw materials for production of animal feeds.

Wheat prices are fairly low compared with alternative fuels in countries such as rice bran, broken rice, tapioca and corn.
