USDA stops using field data for spring, durum wheat estimates

The US Department of Agriculture will no longer use actual data collected from farmers' fields to help estimate yields for spring and Durum wheat.

The USDA's National Agriculture Statistics Service said in a statement posted on its Web site: "Previously, the agency measured spring wheat production in selected fields in Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota, and Durum wheat production in North Dakota, beginning in late July."

The next Crop Production report - scheduled to be released in August - and the next September issuance of the Small Grains Summary will contain yield and production forecasts, but they will be based solely on producer surveys conducted by NASS.
