Japan regulators to seek US biotech corn opportunities

A delegation from Japan will visit Indiana, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Illinois to gather information on the process leading to the entry of biotech corn into the Japanese regulatory system.

The Japanese officials are involved in food, feed and environmental approval of biotech corn.

The US Grains Council in cooperation with the US Embassy in Tokyo organised the team to travel to the US for meetings with US government regulators, US biotech industry organisations, as well as US corn farmers and companies involved in the production, distribution and exports of US corn to Japan.

The meetings will inform the Japanese regulators on biotech corn events in the pipeline for entry into the Japanese regulatory system in the near future. In addition, team members will see how regulatory approvals and regulations need to be able to work within the real world of US corn production, distribution and exports system.
