Brazil to open new aquaculture parks by mid-2011
Â
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) predicted that by mid-2011 the implementation of aquaculture parks in eight reservoirs of the Paranapanema River, between Brazilian states of Sao Paulo and Parana will be realised.
It considers that some of them might even be ready this year to start as pilots. Overall, aquaculture parks will have a capacity to produce around 89,000 tonnes of fish annually in an area of 185,235 hectares.
The studies for the demarcation and establishment of aquaculture parks, which require an investment of BRL2.3 million (US$1.3 million), are conducted by the Gia Institute.
Â
Since 2007, the federal government built these parks as part of the government's strategy to turn Brazil into one of the largest global seafood producers.
Â
To date, the MPA has delivered 1,941 areas for fish production in aquaculture parks of the Union, specifically in the Itaipu dam, Castanhao, Ilha Solteira, Furnas, Tres Marias and Tucurui, according to reports.
Â
On the other hand, the MPA also requested the demarcation and establishment of aquaculture parks in the reservoir of the hydroelectric dam in Lajeado, 50 kilometres from Palmas.
Â
In these places, whose implementation is driven by the company Neocorp Desenvolvimento de Projetos, of Porto Alegre, native fish such as pacu will be raised.
