Scotland to study sustainability of its salmon industry
The Scottish salmon farming industry carrying out its first-ever industry-wide assessment of the salmon sustainability.
Independent experts would identify the environmental, energy, economic and social impacts of the industry and recommend solutions.
Commissioned by the industry's trade body Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation (SSPO), the study will cover waste generated in production, energy utilisation, carbon emissions and socio-economic benefits.
Sid Patten, Chief Executive of SSPO, said that a wide-ranging assessment of the industry's sustainability is crucial to its development.
Patten said investment in research and development, the introduction of environmental management systems and the adoption of new technologies would ensure the industry continues to progress and improve.
