Nanotechnology could redefine feed production

A project with the potential to replace antibiotics in feed production using nanotechnology is gaining momentum, according to an European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)-commissioned report.

The project, involving experts from Wageningen University (WUR) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Union Commission, revealed that antibacterial nanosilver could have a similar effect to antibiotics currently used in feed when added to drinking water for poultry.

The team also discovered that polystyrene-based particles could be added to poultry feed to bind bacteria, so that they pass through the gastrointestinal tract of the bird along with other faecal matter.

Other developments in nanotechnology for livestock include the potential use of nanoclay as a mycotoxin binder, and nano-selenium to improve digestibility.
