Beef recalled in Colorado is tied to human illness
A Colorado grocery store is recalling 466,236 pounds of ground beef after it was linked to 14 human cases of salmonellosis in the state, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
The King Soopers grocery store, owned by The Kroger Co. (KR), will unlikely be able to get much of the recalled beef back because it was first sold at the retail level from May 23 through June 13, the USDA said.
Infection with the salmonella bacteria can be deadly to humans, especially if consumed by the very young or the very old, the USDA said.
And this beef contamination is especially dangerous, the USDA said, because: "This particular strain of Salmonella, Salmonella Typhimurium DT104, is resistant to many commonly prescribed drugs, which can increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals."
Kroger spokespeople weren't available for immediate comment.
