Scotland seafood firm to close production site

Strathaird Salmon will close its factory in Inverness on Friday, laying off most of the 320 workers there.

Last year, Strathaird Salmon announced it planned to move its smoked salmon production to Fraserburgh because the cost of upgrading the factory over the next few years would amount to at least GBP7 million (US$11.5 million).

The Inverness site may not remain empty for long as the company confirmed they had received inquiries for the factory. Still, the closure is a blow because it was thought that the seafood business had escaped the worst effects of the recession.

Strathaird Salmon is owned by The Seafood Company, which is part of the Findus Group.
