Global pork market to grow by 13% by 2018
The global volume of fresh pork sales reached 89 million tonnes last year, an increase of 3% from the previous year, with Asia Pacific accounting almost 60.9 million tonnes of the total, according to Euromonitor International.
Consumption in Asia-Pacific, it said, is driven by China with the country accounting for 82% of regional volume sales. Volumes rose 16% over 2008-2013 compared to 12% globally. This, despite the series of food safety issues surrounding Chinese pork in recent years.
For 2013-2018 global pork sales are expected to grow by 13%, an increase of some 11.2 million tonnes, by 2018. Most of this rise will be seen in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America, where population growth will support volume growth.
