Argentina 2007/08 wheat planting 81 percent complete

As of July 19, farmers had planted 81 percent of the of the 5.5 million hectares seen going to wheat in the 2007-08 crop cycle, one point behind last year's planting pace, the Agriculture Secretariat said in its weekly crop report Friday (July 20).

The young crop is generally developing well, although dry weather in some areas of Buenos Aires and La Pampa provinces was delaying seeding, the Secretariat said.

On the other hand, farmers had harvested 96 percent of the 2006/07 corn crop, compared with 98 percent on the same date a year ago.

Most of the remaining corn fields are in the northern areas of the farm belt, where farmers are waiting for the grains to dry out before completing the harvest, the secretariat said.

The Secretariat forecasts 22 million tonnes of corn coming from the 2006/07 crop.
