Livestock, poultry stock rise 15.28% in Mindanao, Philippines
As of January 1, 2010, Northern Mindanao had a total of 16.47 million heads of livestock and poultry, compared with 14.29 million heads at the same period last year.
Chicken posted the highest increase, from 12,472,970 to 14,581,674 heads or 16.91% as per inventory conducted by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) in the region, due to the chicken farm expansions and the increase in laying flocks. Those of hogs or swine also increased from 833,926 to 845,511 heads or 1.39%, cattle, from 277,784 to 281,063 heads or 1.18% and goats, from 239,847 to 240,645 heads or 0.33%.
Meanwhile, the volume of livestock and poultry production in live weight, during Q1 2010 also increased from 80,379 tonnes to 83,243 tonnes or 3.56%. Cattle production also increased 4% from 7,855 tonnes to 8,169 tonnes. Swine production increased from 32,414 tonnes to 33,589 tonnes or 3.62%; chicken, from 28,287 tonnes to 29,270 tonnes or 3.48%; and chicken eggs, from 7,478 tonnes to 7,628 tonnes or 2.01%.
