Kazakh 2009-10 grain exports seen at 7-8 million tonnes

Kazakhstan is likely to export in the 2009-2010 marketing year 7 million to 8 million tonnes of grain, the agriculture ministry said Monday (July 20).

The main importers of Kazakhstan's grain will remain the republics of Trans-Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan. The ministry also said grain exports would be possible via Ukrainian sea ports, as Ukraine is likely to export less of its own grain.

The agriculture ministry said earlier that Kazakhstan was likely to harvest this year 15 percent to 20 percent more grain than in 2008, when 15.6 million tonnes was harvested.

The ministry also said earlier Kazakhstan's grain export potential in the 2008-2009 marketing year was 6 million tonnes, compared with over 8 million tonnes in the previous marketing year.
