Argentina's 2007-08 wheat crop was growing fast after a week of exceptionally warm weather, but continued dry weather in Cordoba and Santa Fe provinces may spur some farmers to plant early corn instead, the Agriculture Secretariat said in its weekly crop report Friday (July 18).
Moisture levels improved in Buenos Aires province due to light rainfall over the past weeks, but conditions were still too dry to plant wheat in parts of Cordoba and Santa Fe, the Secretariat said.
Farmers had planted 71 percent of the 4.8 million hectares seen going to wheat this year as of July 17, the Secretariat said. The planting pace is 7 percentage points behind the pace at this date last year.
About 97 percent of the 2007-08 corn crop has been harvested as of July 17, one percentage point ahead of the pace at this time last year, the Secretariat said.
Output is forecast at 20.4 million tonnes.
On the other hand, farmers wrapped up the 2007-08 soy harvest this week, bringing in 46.5 million tonnes, according to the Secretariat.
