Russian beef output dips in Jan-June
Russia produced in January-June 87,600 tonnes of beef, 1.2% less than in the year-earlier period, the state statistics service reported late Thursday (Jul 15).
The statistics service said beef output in June fell 0.1% compared with June 2009 but increased 12% compared with May this year.
Cattle numbers (mainly dairy) and beef production in Russia have declined over the last two decades and remained low as beef cattle raising continues to be unprofitable, mainly due to the disparities between input costs (feed) and beef wholesale and retail prices.
Although declining, the herd is falling at lower rates compared to previous years as a result of increasing investments, especially in dairy cattle breeding under government supported programmes, according to a separate report.
