Perstorp Franklin uses new buffering technology for organic acid products

Press release

Perstorp Franklin, a major supplier of organic acid-based feed additives, has introduced a wide range of products based upon a new buffering technology. Tests carried out at different institutes have shown that these new products are successful in their actions against different microorganisms including E.coli and Salmonella.

Safe and user friendly additives are seriously gaining interest with increasing legislation and growing consumer involvement on the use of feed additives. Organic acid-based additives fulfil important demands of the consumers of today and tomorrow.

To further improve their acceptance in the feed industry and by consumers, it is important that the products are safe and user friendly. Until now, ammonium has been used widely in the industry for buffering of organic acids, especially formic acid. The buffering is needed to reduce corrosivity and to create more user friendly feed additives.

However, new data have indicated the development of formamide when this buffering is used. Formation of this substance has given rise to the implication that the hazard classification of many ammonium-based products needs to change to toxic.

Using a different molecule to buffer the organic acids, Perstorp Franklin has produced organic acid-based products in which these undesired side products cannot develop. As a result, even safer feed additives are offered to the feed industry.

User friendliness of the new products is comparable to old formulas. Efficacy studies conducted at independent institutes indicate that there is no difference between the old and new buffering technology. The available data has given the technical department at Perstorp Franklin high confidence in their new products.

Currently, organic acid-based products are used in the feed industry mainly for their mode of action against different microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and moulds and for their pH effects.

The use of correct products has shown to provide good solutions for practical problems in animal feeding and husbandry. After the EU ban on antibiotic growth promoters, the use of Perstorp Franklin's organic acid-based products can be an excellent base for the development of an alternative feeding strategy under the new conditions.
