Report: global poultry production to rise in next nine years

According to the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2014, global poultry production will rise in the next nine years and is expected to contribute 28.3 of the additional 57.7 million tonnes by 2023.

The outlook, a medium-term agricultural report, said that pork will account for just 16.6 million tonnes, while beef (9 million tonnes) and sheep meat (3.8 million tonnes) will grow at significantly slower pace.

The report emphasised that poultry has advantages with regard to output growth, including smaller land requirements that enables production to be located near population centres, as well as a shorter production cycle.

The outlook also pointed out that meat prices have been at historically high levels since 2011 and are currently 90% higher than in 2004, mainly due to the increase in feed costs.
