Czech Republic finds antibiotics in Polish poultry

Tests implemented by the Czech Republic's State Veterinary Administration (SVS) have revealed traces of antibiotics in chicken cutlets from Poland.

The SVS says the frozen meat, which has a production date of October 19, 2012, came from a shipment from Poland's ALMA company, based in the Lodz region of central Poland.

Tests have been carried out on 103 poultry and other meat products over the last week from Poland, Germany, Hungary, Austria, the Netherlands and Brazil.

"This inspection was launched in response to information that in some farms in a neighbouring country, breeders are using banned veterinary drugs for fattening poultry," said SVS spokesman Josef Duben.

Some 1,200 kilogrammes of chicken cutlets were imported to the Czech Republic in the suspect Polish shipment, and the SVS has ordered that the meat be withdrawn from the market. Buyers may return it to the distributor.
