Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, has introduced Plenish as the brand name for the high oleic soy oil trait in the next generation of healthy soy products from Pioneer.
The Plenish high oleic soy oil trait will be introduced in the industry-leading lineup of Pioneer brand soy varieties. These varieties are on track for a limited introduction in the US for 2010 planting, pending regulatory approval, and will be offered in a broad range of maturity groups.
Developed through the Pioneer exclusive Accelerated Yield Technology (AYT) system and launched in the Y Series product line, these soy varieties will have key agronomic and defensive traits, including resistance to SCN, Phytophthora and SDS, according to John Muenzenberger, Pioneer business manager for specialty oils.
''Plenish brand high oleic soy oil will provide nutritionally enhanced oil with the highest oleic content in soy under commercial development,'' said Muenzenberger. ''This meets food industry needs and consumer demand for a soy-based trans fat solution. Plenish high oleic soy oil will provide the high stability and performance of partially hydrogenated oil that food companies need without the trans fat and with lower saturated fats."
Extensive testing of oil produced from soy in 2007 and 2008 confirmed that Plenish high oleic soy oil contains about 80 percent oleic acid, the highest oleic content in soy under commercial development. The high levels of oleic acid significantly increase the stability of the oil when used in frying and food processing applications. Plenish high oleic soy oil also will provide flexibility to be used alone or in combination with other oils to optimise cost, functionality and taste.
Testing results also show this soy-based trans fat solution has more than 20 percent less saturated fatty acid including 40 percent less palmitic acid than commodity soybean oil and 75 percent less saturated fat than palm oil, a tropical oil.
