Argentina ends 2006/07 soy harvest; sees record output at 47.2 million tonnes

Argentina wrapped up the 2006-07 soybean harvest this week, growing a record 47.2 million metric tonnes, the Agriculture Secretariat said in its weekly crop report Friday (July 13).

Yields averaged 3 tonnes per hectare, with quality varied due to mixed weather conditions during the season, the Secretariat said.

As of July 12, farmers had planted 73 percent of the of the 5.5 million hectares seen going to wheat in the 2007/08 crop cycle, two points behind last year's planting pace.

Dry conditions and unusually cold weather slowed wheat planting in some areas, the Secretariat said.

On the other hand, farmers had harvested 95 percent of the 2006/07 corn crop, compared with 97 percent a year ago.

The Secretariat forecasts 22 million tonnes of corn coming from the 2006/07 crop.
