Indonesia's cattle weight restriction not a problem

Indonesia's implementation of a 350 kilogramme weight limit on foreign cattle may not be a thing to worry about, as a live cattle exporter said the new rule has not affected his livestock business.

Indonesia enforced the 350kg weight restriction just this June, in a bid to protect the country's own cattle prices and industry by restricting the number of heavy cattle from overseas.

South East Asian Livestock Services manager Sid Parker said he completely understands the new regulations, and said there are solutions to deal with it.

He said the Egyptian, Malaysian and Filipino trade will help pick up excess cattle, but he has also heard talk of an abattoir being established in the north.

"Our main client in Indonesia has never taken cattle over 350 kg. His cattle has to be between 280 and 350 kilos on arrival up there," Parker said.

Explaining that he understands Indonesia's reason behind implementing the rule, Parker said, "because they want to add value to the cattle they get in and they want to get rid of their waste products."
