Russia urges sufficient meat output for security

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday (Jul 13) called for maintaining domestic meat production at a sufficient level to ensure food security, ITAR-TASS reported.

Medvedev said Russia had so far failed to fully overcome the drop in meat production that took place in the 1990s.

He said pork output had risen by 40% and poultry output had increased by 76% since the government launched a national project to promote meat production in 2006.

Medvedev said, however, that Russia had failed to maintain sufficient beef production.
