US broiler exports to Eastern Europe at sharp rise

The US has witnessed broiler meat exports to Eastern European nations increased by 108% in the first four months of 2012.

According to the latest International Poultry and Egg review from the USDA, exports to the 12 former states of the Soviet Union rose to 184,000 tonnes between January and April this year compared to 88,000 tonnes in 2011.

Russia took the bulk of the exports with 81,000 tonnes, followed by Kazakhstan and Georgia with 34,000 tonnes and 29,000 tonnes.

The rise in exports to the 12 states - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan - made the region the second largest destination for US broiler meat, behind North America. The region was sixth for turkey meat.

For the January-April period the number one cumulative total US broiler meat item exported item to the FSU-12 over the last 10 years has been frozen leg quarters.

During the first four months of the year, US world broiler meat exports have risen by 15%.
