South Australia builds A$25.8 million research facility

South Australia announced plans to build a A$25.8 million aquaculture research facility that would create a research pool to steer future growth in the industry last week.

The Marine Innovation SA facility would bring the aquaculture industry, research and academia together, said SA Research and Development Institute's(SARDI) Aquatic Sciences Program Leader John Carragher.

The first major step would be to build the facility's biosecurity division around SARDI's existing Aquatic Sciences Centre at West Beach.

The West Beach facility, currently housing research into finfish diets and water quality, would include an advanced containment facility.

The centre would tap into research skills from Flinders and Adelaide universities, together with SARDI Aquaculture and the South Australian Museum.
