Denmark's Tulip to close one of its UK pork and bacon operations

Tulip Food Company, a subsidiary of Denmark's Danish Crown Group, announced it will shut down its pork and bacon processing business in Thetford, England within two months, after forty years of operations.

The closure will have 500 people losing their jobs.

The company said it had been unable to find a feasible alternative to closing the plant and will complete the transfer of production to other UK sites by the end of September.

Union officials apparently reluctantly agreed to a redundancy package, which will see up to 350 full-time workers out of a job on September 14.

The fresh pork and bacon packing lines will be transferred to the West Country.
