Netherlands hit by new mad cow case

The Dutch government has reported a new case of mad cow disease, or BSE, in a five-year old animal, marking the country's 78th BSE case since the outbreak in 1997.

The case was reported after a routine blood test was done on an animal designated for slaughter.

In response, the authorities started probing animal feed to determine the origin of the BSE contamination, amid suspicions that feed contaminants might have triggered the disease.

All other animals from the same herd were also tested.
